The City of Winter Haven, FL (City Gov’t.) Natural Resources Division and Urban Forestry Advisory Board in conjunction with UF IFAS Extension Polk County are hosting an Arbor Day Celebration in honor of Florida Arbor Day. Funding was provided by Florida Forest Service to support this event.
As part of this educational event, trees will be given to the first 140 participating households.
To “earn” a tree, participants will be required to visit all of the educational stations to ensure they are learning about the tree they are given and how to properly care for it.
UF/IFAS Extension agents, Polk County Master Gardeners, and Winter Haven staff will teach participants the basics of tree planting, maintenance, pruning, and tree selection.
The trees available this year were chosen to re-introduce native species, improve biodiversity, and improve the urban forest canopy’s resilience to disturbance and disease. The species available this year are (species subject to change):
– Red Maple (Acer rubrum, https://www.fnps.org/plants/plant/acer-rubrum)
– Dahoon Holly (Ilex cassine, https://www.fnps.org/plants/plant/ilex-cassine)
– Swamp Dogwood (Cornus foemina, https://www.fnps.org/plants/plant/cornus-foemina)
** This event will take place in the newly re-designed south central park, downtown Winter Haven, inbetween Bank of America and Arabella’s Restaurant **
