Face Masks Required Polk County Schools

All students in grades K-12 who are attending in-person classes on campus in any Polk County Public School will be required to wear a face mask this fall while on campus or on a school bus. This decision was made on July 28 and announced on the PCPS Website and Facebook Page.

PCPS has also provided more details on face coverings on their website.

We know there are a lot of questions surrounding mask requirements, so we’ve gone through the comments on Facebook and on the PCPS website to try and answer some of the most common questions. Please contact us if you believe any information below is not accurate.

Note that these requirements are for Polk County Public Schools. Charter and private schools have their own requirements, check directly with your school for more information.

What style of Face Mask or Face Covering is required? 

From the Code of Conduct:Students must wear a face covering that covers both the nose and mouth and fits snugly against the sides of a person’s face with little or no gaps at all times

PCPS Website: Face coverings must cover both the nose and mouth and fit snugly against the face.

Facebook answers: Students can wear face coverings made of fabric – either purchased of homemade – as well as fishing gaiter-type or Buff face coverings, or disposable face coverings.

Can my child wear a mask with a design?

PCPS Website:All face coverings must comply with general dress code and school uniform requirements.”

Facebook answers: Face coverings must comply with the Dress Code in Section 2.06 of the Student Code of Conduct. Face coverings should not contain offensive language or symbols. Basically, anything that wouldn’t be allowed on a T-shirt will not be allowed on a face covering.

This includes anything associated with, encouraging, or referencing:

  • gangs
  • tobacco, drugs, alcohol
  • profanity
  • violence
  • discrimination on the basis of age, color, handicap, national origin,
    marital status, race, religion, or sex.

Does the mask have to match the uniform?

Facebook answers: There is no requirement on face mask color.

Can my child wear a face shield instead of a face mask?

PCPS Website: “Students may wear a face shield in addition to a face covering if they choose.

Facebook answers: Face shields can only be worn with a mask, not in place of a face mask.

What if my child can’t physically wear a mask?

From the Website: PCPS will also grant exemptions to students with medical waivers and other issues that would prevent them from wearing face coverings while on campus. To be medically exempt from wearing a face covering, a student will need to provide a note from their doctor on the medical practice’s letterhead.

What if we don’t have a mask?

From the Website: Students are encouraged to wear their own face coverings, however, the district will provide face coverings for students in need.

What about PreK Students?

PCPS Website: “At this time, we are still recommending but not requiring face coverings for pre-K students.”
