All positions are flexible and allow you to work any time – day or night – from home. We will also have a monthly team meeting over via Zoom to share ideas and brainstorm.

Note that we only currently offer VERY part-time opportunities – less than 10 hours per month. This is ideal for someone who is looking to use their talents to help other families, be part of a team and the Lakeland Mom journey, and make a little extra spending money each month.

Current Positions Available:

  • Parent Contributor / Writer – applications accepted on an ongoing basis.

Parent Contributor / Writer

This position is perfect for someone who loves to write and/or track down information and is great at sharing experiences and information in an easy to understand written format. Our parent contributors will write original articles to be published on LakelandMom.com.

We have a list of topics that will be assigned, and your content ideas are also welcome and encouraged. Although our name is Lakeland Mom, we cover the surrounding areas and welcome writers living anywhere in Polk County. (If you have a unique perspective and want to write a single article or a limited series on a specific topic, contact us about a guest post instead).

Job Duties

  • Create original articles for LakelandMom.com. Length and required content will vary by article.
  • Take photographs to accompany articles where appropriate.
  • Must be able to meet via Zoom at least once monthly for a Lakeland Mom Team Meeting during business hours.

Required Skills

  • Excellent writing & research skills.
    • You do not need to have professional writing experience OR creative writing skills, but you must know the rules of grammar and have a knack for organizing information into an easy-to-read format.
  • Detail-oriented and organized.
  • Good communication skills, in person and in writing.
  • Professional attitude in all interactions while researching and writing articles. Professional appearance required for any in-person interviews or meetings (we’re not talking suits or dresses, but something nicer than exercise pants).
  • Self-starter who is able to work independently and remotely and adhere to deadlines.
  • Positive attitude and willingness to accept edits and feedback.

Required Equipment

  • Access to your own computer, phone, email, and internet.

Required Articles & Compensation

  • Must be willing to write 2 original articles per month and commit to 12 months. Additional articles are possible depending on each month’s editorial calendar and your availability.
  • Contributors are paid per article starting at $30. Rate is increased for articles requiring research, interviews, or a site visit.

Independent Contractor Status

All available positions with Lakeland Mom are for independent contractors / freelancers. Contractor is responsible for the payment of all taxes with respect to the services you perform as an independent contractor. Lakeland Mom will not treat contractor as an employee for any purpose. This means we set out the expectations for the end result, but you choose how and when you will complete the work.

Writing Sample:

A writing sample is required. Please have your writing sample prepared before you complete the application. It can be uploaded as a PDF or Word Document, pasted into the box below, or you can link to outside content if it is online.

Don’t have a writing sample? Write about a local attraction, nature area, playground, or any topic that interests you that would be relevant to other moms.

Writing samples should be a minimum of 4 paragraphs and 250 words. It does not need to be a complete article but does need to give us a good idea of your writing style.

  • How do you access the site? What features do you use? Do you read our newsletter?
  • List and describe any experience you have that would be relevant to writing for Lakeland Mom. Stay at home mom experience counts too! (OPTIONAL – upload resume at bottom of application and type “see resume” in the box below)
  • Tell us at least 3 topics you would like to write about. Can be a specific article title or a general topic.
  • Please list your educational experience OR upload resume at end of application and write “see resume” in box below.
  • Do you own your own business or have a personal blog? Are you a member of a moms group or parents group? If yes, please include details.
  • (If yes, please elaborate. This is not a required skill for this position).
  • Do you have access to a laptop or desktop?
  • Please give us an idea of the compensation range you’re seeking PER ARTICLE.
  • Tell us any unique parenting experiences, how long you’ve lived here, info about your family, where you go for kids activities, etc. Anything that gives you a unique perspective or insight that might be useful to other parents.
